Jetty Island ferry launches today

With its warm shallow water, long sandy beaches and family-friendly environment, Jetty Island attracts thousands of visitors every summer.

The two-mile-long manmade island is one of Everett’s most popular summertime destinations, drawing an average of 20,000 visitors a year.

For much of the year, the island west of the Everett Marina is accessible only by private boat. But the city operates a ferry service during the summer.

Ferry service to the island begins today and will continue until Labor Day, Sept. 3.

Jetty Island is owned by the Port of Everett but is operated by the city as a park during the summer.

Here’s what you need to know.

Cost: Free. Although the city suggests people who ride the ferry leave donations of $2 for adults and $1 for children.

Where to catch the ferry: At the 10th Street boat launch and Marine Park, just west of W. Marine View Drive.

The ferry departs every half-hour from 10 a.m. to 5:25 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5:25 p.m. on Sundays.

What to bring: Beach supplies, a blanket, a jacket, sunscreen, water, snacks, shoes and a change of clothing.

Programs: The official flag-raising ceremony will begin at 11:30 a.m. today. Afterward, visitors can join a beach treasure hunt and check out a master sand artist at work.

Interpretive walks led by naturalists focus on natural history, wildflowers and birds. They are held twice daily, at 12:15 p.m. and 3:15 p.m.

Things to see: The Osprey Camera Project offers visitors an inside look at the osprey populations at Port Gardner Bay and along the Snohomish River. You can take a peek at these birds in Jetty Island’s Discovery Hut.

Lifeguards: None.

Bathrooms: Yes, but the outhouses near the dock area are not equipped with running water.

Physical requirements: The rugged, sandy island is very difficult to navigate in a wheelchair or to push a stroller through. However, the city does have off-pavement wheelchairs available on the island.

Restrictions include:

* Alcohol, glass containers and pets are prohibited on the island.

* Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

* Bonfires in designated places only and no overnight camping.
