EVERETT – The Everett AquaSox got a long, lean look at MatthewLatos Wednesday night and what little they saw wasn’t very pretty.
Eugene’s 6-foot-6 right-handed pitcher used a menacing fastball that reached 97 mph to strike out 10 batters in five quality innings and lead the Emeralds to a 10-2 victory over the AquaSox in a Northwest League game at Everett Memorial Stadium.
With the win Eugene halted its 11-game losing streak and Everett (31-38) dropped back to sole possession of last place in the West Division, one game behind the Emeralds with seven games remaining in the season.
Latos (1-4) was especially dominant in the second and fourth innings. In each frame he struck out three consecutive batters after the leadoff man had reached scoring position to quell the threats and quiet the 2,498 fans in attendance.
Everett batters fanned 17 times and with 726 this season the Sox are well within striking distance of their own league record of 738, set in 1996.
Latos got all the support he needed in the third inning when Yefri Carvajal deposited an offering from Everett starter Doug Salinas (2-8) over the center field wall for a three-run homer that provided a 5-0 cushion.
Carvajal, who came in hitting .221, battered the Sox with a 3-for-5 performance that included a pair of doubles. Lance Zawadski and Kellen Kulbacki added eighth inning homers to punctuate the Emeralds’ 14-hit attack.
The carnage might have been worse for the Sox if not for Marquis Pettis, who replaced Salinas in the fourth and provided three innings of shutout relief.
