OK, time to catch up on some feedback.
First, Riley in Everett asks: “What is a WHL education contract?”
That would be in response to the WHL education contracts signed by 15-year-old prospects Kent Simpson, Markus McCrea and Tyler Parker during training camp. The contract is an agreement between the team and the player that the team will arrange for high schooling locally if necessary while the player is in Everett, then pay for a year of college for each season the player is with the team. I believe there’s also some insurance clauses involved.
From a practical hockey standpoint, though, what it really means is that the player is committed to playing major junior instead of NCAA hockey. By signing the contract the players have basically forfeitted their NCAA eligibility, meaning the Tips no longer have to worry about competition from NCAA teams for the players’ services.
I’m not sure if there’s anything in the contract that obligates the Tips to take the players onto the team by some point. But it is definitely an indicator that the players are in the team’s future plans.
Second, here is Nick Paredes’ response to my guesswork on the status of NHL campers: …..
OK, maybe not. It seems the paper’s e-mail server went down during the process of typing this. I get Nick’s response up once I can access my account again.
All right, let’s try again. Nick’s response:
I agree mostly….here is my take.
Just my 2 cents….my roster posted below:
One thing I’d like to point out is, I’m not comfortable with Barrie being the guy when Irving is gone, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they found another goalie somewhere to come in and backup (much like they did with Reekie). If Crowley or Gendur leave, I could see them keeping Reekie, however I think Reekie needs to start somewhere. I can’t see him wanting to be a backup again in his 20 YO season. Just to make sure I’m clear, I have not heard one word from Reekie that he wants/needs to be a starter. That’s just my assumption. That a guy with his talent would want to be the starter to showcase his talent as a 20 YO.
As for MacLean, I was impressed this weekend, but I’m not hearing anything one way or another from other Everett fans. I had one F spot open on my list and I put him in there based on what I personally saw. There’s still a lot of time for him to fall into or out of favor…lol.
