    Shorecrest reaches 3A district title match

    MILL CREEK -- Shorecrest and Mt. Vernon both lost only one game in advancing to the 3A District 1 volleyball final.

    The Shorecrest Scots (12-2 overall), the No. 1 seed from the Wesco 3A, started the day against Lynnwood, whom they defeated 3-1 in the morning match. They then beat Ferndale 3-0.

    Mt. Vernon came into the tournament as the No. 1 seed from the Northwest League. After a 3-0 sweep of Arlington in the morning, it went on to defeat Meadowdale 3-1.

    Shorecrest and Mt. Vernon play for the championship Saturday with the winner receiving a state tournament berth.

    1A District 1 meet: At Bellingham, King's captured the No. 1 seed into the 1A Bi-District tournament to be held Saturday at King's. The Knights swept all three matches without dropping a set. King's defeated Nooksack Valley 3-0 in the title game. The Knights' two outside hitters -- Bianca Rowland and Kailey Trautman -- led a dominating performance directed by setter Anna Cesari (34 assists). Rowland had 16 kills and Trautmann had nine against the Pioneers.

    King's defeated Meridian in one semifinal 3-0. Rowland and Trautmann had a combined 27 kills. King's ended Friday Harbor's season with a 3-0 victory in the first round.

    Nooksack Valley ended Coupeville's season with 3-0 victory in the first round.

    Highland Christian 48, Evergreen Lutheran 28: At Des Moines, Highland Christian quarterback Vince Kurtzenacker threw four touchdown passes to Jeff Kelly and caught one from Stormee Brown, who had two rushing TDs, as Highland Christian (5-3 overall) won the non-league game Highland Christian plays its final regular season game Saturday at Mansfield. If it wins, it plays the No. 3 team from the Pacific Coast Conference in a B-8 state play-in contest.

    Life Christian Academy 40, Cedar Park Christian-Bothell 14: At Lakewood, Life Christian Academy recovered two fumbles and had an interception and a safety en route to a 37-point second quarter.

    Boys tennis

    3A District 1 meet: At Shoreline, Ricardo Cellis of Shorecrest earned a trip to the state meet in May with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over teammate Jason Hollenbach in the second-place singles match. Hollenbech will be an alternate to state. The Shorecrest doubles team of Brian Sharkey and Matt LaCourse, who lost in the doubles final Friday, also advanced to state as the No. 2 team out of the district by virtue of their victory in the first round of the tournament over consolation survivors Tyler Hanson and Duncan Linn of Ferndale.

    4A District 1 meet: At Stanwood, Rhett Bouche of Mountlake Terrace took third place and earned a state berth with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory over Robin Choi of Jackson. Choi will be an alternate to state. The Shorewood team of Scott McConnell and Tristan Reni defeated Jason Schonberg and Jordan Beauchamp of Stanwood for third in the doubles bracket. McConnell and Reni earned a state berth. Schonberg and Beauchamp will be alternates.

    Boys cross country

    1A Tri-District meet: At Tacoma, King's qualified three runners for next week's state meet, led by second-place finisher Brandon Dean.

    King's qualifiers--2. Dean 16:38.5, 10. Halvorsen 17:15.8, 11. McMahon 17:16.3

    Girls cross country

    1A Tri-District meet: At Tacoma, Olivia Thomas finished first in 18 minutes, 49.7 seconds to lead King's to the team championship.
