Skip Priest won't go for schools chief

Posted at 7:32 pm by Jerry Cornfield

Scratch Rep. Skip Priest from the list of possible challengers to Superintendent of Public Instruction Terry Bergeson.

"I'm not running," the Federal Way Republican told me late Monday afternoon.

I wouldn't usually write about non-candidates but Priest had been giving serious thought to going for it. He's been pretty vocal on education in the Legislature so it would have made for a very intriguing match-up.

State Sen. Jim Kastama, D-Puyallup, has been courted pretty hard too by
Bergeson critics. He has even hinted publicly he might run.

We'll have to wait and see.

Candidate for OSPI
There is already an excellent candidate running for OSPI. His name is Dr. Rich Semler, the current superintendent of the Richland School District. Dr. Semler fully understands our math WASL mess and has a very good plan to fix it. He will bring back financial integrity to OSPI and he will revise the WASL exam so it actually tests mathematics. There are no other candidates on the horizon with his experience, proven ability, and full understanding of what it takes to straighten this state out.
