After a 30-second snippet of the new Weezer song “Pork and Beans” started floating through Web spaces earlier this week, the band has released the full version.
While the group’s last album – let us not mince words – sucked, this new song sounds like a return to form. Judge for yourself by clicking here.
So why is this better than every song on “Make Believe?”
Well, for one, it sounds like singer Rivers Cuomo is finally letting some auto-biographical asides slip back into his writing – even if it is relegated to lines about Rogaine and his desire to craft perfect songs: “Timbaland knows the way to reach the top of the chart. Maybe if I worked with him I could perfect the art.”
After a couple listens, the song sounds like it grabs the poppiest quirks from the Blue and Green albums, with a small dash of “Pinkerton“‘s crunch. The operative word there is “quirks.” Unlike the disappointingly antiseptic “Make Believe,” this song has character.
The group also unveiled a new Web site today, building on the “red album” concept that may end up giving the album its unofficial name. The site is streaming the single, in case you have trouble with the media player I linked to higher in this post.
The album is slated for release on June 24.
