Heath, Bergman and Madonia win sprint car mains at Skagit Speedway

ALGER, Wash. — Round 5 of the Foothills Toyota Tundra Series was full of fast racing and hard crashes on Saturday at Skagit Speedway.

Colton Heath won a marathon Outlaw 410 Sprints feature main. Jason Solwold led the majority of the race, but in the closing laps he tangled with a lapped car, flipping violently in turn four and ending his night.

Heath, who had worked his way up from 11th to trailing Solwold, took the lead and the victory on the subsequent restart. Second place went to Nick Engberg and Travis Rutz was third.

Rutz also set fast time. Heat race wins went to Barry Martinez, Eric Fisher and Heath.

The Budweiser 360 Sprint Main was similar to the 410 main in that one driver led the majority of the race before crashing late.

Rod Perkins led for the first 19 laps before a steering malfunction sent his car into the wall coming out of turn 4. Seth Bergman took the lead on the restart and held off Brock Lemley for the remaining five laps to win his first Skagit Speedway main event of the year.

Alan Munn was third. Fast time was Mike Sather. And heat race wins went to Lemley and Jason Cocking.

Devin Madonia won his second main event of the season in the Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprints.

Using lapped traffic to his advantage, Madonia chose the right line to swerve past slower traffic in turn 2 on lap 18 to take the lead from Kyle Oman. Oman, who had led every lap up to that point, briefly challenged Madonia for the lead but spun out on the backstretch.

Second place went to Kelsey Carpenter and Steve James finished third. Carpenter and James won the heat races.

Tyler Ketchum won his second main event of the year in the Wilson Auto Brokers Outlaw Hornets.

After working his way through the field Ketchum passed Ben Gunderson to take the lead on the white flag lap en route to victory lane. Gunderson brought home second and defending hornet champion Greg Hibma was third.

Next Saturday is Relay For Life night at Skagit Speedway. After the races, the Skagit Speedway staff will head to Burlington-Edison High School to walk as many laps as they possibly can to raise money for cancer awareness and research.

Donation buckets and “Sponsor an Official” forms will be out en masse during the evening. For more information on the Skagit Speedway Relay For Life or details on the Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup, go to www.skagitspeedway.com
