A desperate need will be filled Tuesday in Tulalip.
Hundreds of children will delight in a new playground to be installed at the Tulalip Boys &Girls Club.
It’s going to be a KaBOOM structure. KaBOOM is a national nonprofit organization that aims to create a place to play within walking distance of every child in the United States.
Since 1995, KaBOOM has completed more than 1,500 playground construction projects, all built in one day.
The Tulalip project features Seattle Seahawk Bobby Engram as the special builder, says Diane Prouty, administrative assistant with the club.
“We need a playground here so badly,” Prouty says. “We serve 220-plus children daily after school.”

The Halloween haunted house on Camano Island was a success, with more than 200 visitors.
The Madrona Fire Sirens have had an open house on Halloween since 1984.
Peggy Black says the open house has included a haunted house for the past decade.
“Firefighters, with Keith Pappas, build the house,” Black says. “Fire Sirens furnish the food, cookies, candy and cider.”
The Madrona Fire Sirens have their act together.
They’ve supported fire and rescue services on the island for more than a half-century.

Here are a couple of dining-out tips for the weekend.
The 13th annual Camano Island Chamber Chili and Chowder Cook Off is planned for 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Camano Senior and Community Center, 606 Arrowhead Road, Camano Island.
Last year, they had more than 1,200 customers.

“Accept no substitutes,” Baum says. “Ours is the best.”
And if you’re out on the bazaar trail, follow signs heading north from Angel of the Winds Casino in Arlington to “A Kackman Christmas” holiday gift and craft bazaar.
It’s planned for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and Saturday at 5817 252nd St. NE.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Ray Kjolso and Lloyd Hatfield will be outdoors cooking free hot dogs.

Fun Fact: About 20 pies were entered at the recent TimberFest 2008 baking contest in Darrington.
Several entries came from politicians, including Mayor Joyce Jones.
The winning pie was entered by Rep. Kirk Pearson, R-Monroe, who had a little baking help from his mother, Jones says.
As well as keeping his seat in Tuesday’s election, Pearson toed an all-American line at TimberFest.
He entered an apple pie.
“And we won the homecoming game,” Jones says.
