Colleges have eye on young Kingma

Most high school sophomores can only dream of playing on the varsity. Then there’s Brett Kingma, who already has scholarship offers from four NCAA Division I college basketball programs.

Kingma, a 6-foot-2 sophomore guard at Jackson High School in Mill Creek, has offers from Gonzaga University, the University of Portland, Portland State University and Eastern Washington University, his father, Gregg Kingma, said Wednesday.

The brother of current University of Washington women’s basketball player Kristi Kingma, Brett Kingma averaged 17.5 points per game as a freshman last season and earned second-team All-Wesco South honors. This past summer he averaged about 25 points per game playing for Emerald City Basketball Academy, a Seattle-based select team, Gregg Kingma said. Competing against high-level competition across the country, Brett attracted the attention of several college coaches, his father said.

As a member of the Class of 2011, Brett Kingma can’t officially accept a scholarship until November of 2010.

Brett Kingma has made three unofficial visits to Gonzaga and plans to watch the ninth-ranked Bulldogs play several times this season, Gregg Kingma said.

“Certainly Gonzaga is at the top of (Brett’s) list right now because of their history of being real successful with players like him,” Gregg Kingma said. “He’s real excited about that and I wouldn’t be surprised if he did commit early at some point.”

How soon might that happen? Greg Kingma said it wouldn’t surprise him if Brett made a verbal commitment in the next few months. A verbal commitment is non-binding.

Brett Kingma is one half of a highly touted backcourt at Jackson. He and teammate Ryan Todd, also a returning starter, lead a team that has been picked to finish second in the Wesco South by the division’s coaches.

Jackson opens its season Thursday at home with a non-division game against Cascade.
