Prep boys basketball: Meadowdale defense hounds Glacier Peak

SNOHOMISH — Meadowdale senior guard Roger O’Neill hit two 3-pointers and scored 12 points and senior-laden Meadowdale held Glacier Peak to less than double digits in scoring in each of the first three quarters to take a 51-37 Wesco South victory Saturday at Glacier Peak High School.

“They played great defense,” Glacier Peak coach Brian Hunter said of Meadowdale. “(And) they got the shot they wanted every time.” Glacier Peak, in its first year of existence, started the season 3-0 before losing to Jackson on Friday.

Meadowdale, which boasts eight seniors, controlled the tempo of the game from the start against a Glacier Peak team that does not have a single senior.

“They (really) hounded the offensive boards,” Hill said.

Brandon Hill hit one 3-pointer and finished with 13 points to lead Glacier Peak. Drew Cummins chipped in 11 points for the Grizzlies.

“Meadowdale played the kind of game they wanted to,” Hill said. “… They played solid man to man defense.”

That defense held Glacier Peak to just 12 points in the first half and 18 points after the first three quarters.

Vashon Island 64, Jackson 55: At Bellevue, Vashon Island, with three players taller than 6-foot-5, utilized it’s size to slow the Jackson offense in the non-league contest. Six-foot-nine Division 1 recruit John Gage of Vashon Island led all scorers with 19 points on 7-for-15 shooting and also had 11 rebounds and four blocks. Bryan Koch of Jackson scored 14 points, making seven of nine field goal attempts and Mike Wishko also had 14 points, going 6-for-8 from the field. Jackson was 3-for-15 from behind the 3-point arc.

Interlake 77, Cedarcrest 49: At Bellevue, aggressive man-to-man defense and a strong presence on the boards led to a 22-7 first quarter for Interlake in the non-league defeat of Cedarcrest. Cedarcrest’s Cameron Padron got in early foul trouble — four in the first half — and that proved especially detrimental in the Red Wolves’ comeback effort. Cedarcrest’s Travis Cook had 15 points, nine rebounds and two steals.
