LYNNWOOD — With Meadowdale behind Lynnwood 49-42 after three quarters, the Mavericks went back to basics in the fourth quarter.
And Hanna Fjortoft.
Meadowdale outscored Lynnwood 24-14 in the fourth quarter with stout defense and clutch free throws and Hanna Fjortoft’s potent scoring attack of 23 points was too much for Lynnwood to handle as Meadowdale squeaked out a 66-63 win over the Royals.
“They were really poised down the stretch to make a comeback like that,” Lynnwood coach Everett Edwards said, referring to the seven-point deficit that Meadowdale faced heading into the fourth quarter.
Meadowdale knocked down 72 percent of its free throws and Hanna Fjortoft was 6-for-7 from the free-throw line in the final moments of the game, sealing the win and keeping Meadowdale (6-1, 7-2) in the hunt for first place in the Western Conference South, trailing Edmonds-Woodway by only one game.
“She was the leader for them down the stretch,” Edwards said of Hanna Fjortoft, who totalled 11 points in the fourth. “The biggest thing was Meadowdale having 11 attempts in the fourth quarter, and out of those 11 attempts they made eight of them.”
The upset of second-place Meadowdale looked possible after Lynnwood rebounded in the second quarter to take a narrow two-point advantage at halftime. Lynnwood then went on to outscore Meadowdale 19-14 in the third, reaching their biggest advantage of the night.
“We maintained the lead until the last couple of minutes and they took the lead and were able to hold on,” Edwards said, “It was a great game.”
Lynnwood was led by Mokun Fajemisin’s 16 points, eight rebounds and six blocks.
“To be honest, I thought it was going to be a closely fought game, and I was looking forward to getting a win against Meadowdale,” Edwards said. “It has been a long time since that has happenned.”
