TACOMA — Mention the Tacoma Dome and you will get a smile from Chad McGuire.
As a player and as a coach, he has enjoyed great experiences in the mammoth multi-purpose venue, site of this weeks Class 3A state basketball championships.
McGuire is head coach of the Meadowdale High School boys basketball team, which won its first two games this week and played top-ranked Franklin Friday in the semifinals. In McGuires seven years leading the Mavericks, his team has made it to the T-Dome three times. The first two trips resulted in sixth-place trophies. This year, Meadowdale is guaranteed to earn another top-eight award at the 16-team event.
Back when he played, McGuire competed in three state basketball tourneys at the Tacoma Dome. He was a guard for old Woodway High. Before graduating in 1990, he helped Woodway placed third in 1988 and sixth in 1989.
Dean Wiley, now a Meadowdale varsity assistant, was McGuires teammate at Woodway. Wiley, also a guard, was a year older than McGuire. They were both point guards, so McGuire backed up Wiley off and on, waiting to become a full-time starter.
“Then he graduated,” said McGuire, “and finally I got my turn.”
