Lake Stevens: Remodeled fire station open house this week

Lake Stevens Fire District 8 is planning an open house at its recently remodeled Fire Station 82 on Saturday.

The event is scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. at the station, 9811 Chapel Hill Road. A ribbon cutting is planned for 1:30 p.m.

The station was remodeled with a $6 million fire levy approved in 2006. The conference room was expanded to accommodate firefighter training sessions, and a firefighter fitness room and dorm rooms were added.

Monroe: Own a piece of the YMCA

The Monroe/Sky Valley Family YMCA is selling personalized bricks for a front walkway. Each brick costs $100, and the proceeds go toward a scholarship fund. People who buy a brick can have their name or a business etched onto the surface. No YMCA membership is necessary. The deadline to buy a brick is July 6. More info: 360-453-2190.

Mill Creek: Help the police craft their plan

People in Mill Creek can help the city’s police department develop a strategic plan that will chart the department’s course through 2030. Two presentations are planned for 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. June 16, and two more are scheduled for 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. June 24.

The events will be at City Hall, 15728 Main St. Participants will be asked to rate current customer service practices, professionalism and responsiveness, enforcement priorities and overall safety concerns of the community.

The plan will help determine future staffing levels, as well as community programs and crime-prevention programs.

Residents unable to attend a meeting can contribute through an online survey, which is available at www.cityofmillcreek.com.

Mountlake Terrace: Teens, children read together at library

A Book Buddies program that will unite teen volunteers with reluctant second- and third-graders readers is starting soon at the library. The program helps kids practice reading, play learning games and have fun. It will be Monday nights from June 29 through Aug. 17. Teen volunteers can apply at the Mountlake Terrace Library, 23300 58th Ave. W.

Applications must be returned by Friday. Parents of second- and third-graders can pick up applications at the library. Volunteers are required to attend a training session at 3:30 p.m. June 15.
