Dr. Stan Herring, medical director of the Spine Center at Harborview Medical Center, will give a presentation on youth head injuries at 6:30 p.m. tonight in the Performing Arts Center at Stanwood High School. The event is free and open to the public.
Dr. Herring will talk about the state’s new concussion management guidelines.
Head injuries are of particular interest in Stanwood because last year Spartans football player Ben Zipp suffered a serious head injury and was airlifted to Harborview. Zipp recovered and is now a senior at Stanwood.
It is unclear if Zipp will try to play football at some point this season, but his teammates reserved a locker for him. Zipp has been attending practices, watching his friends prepare for their first game (Sept. 4 versus Jackson High at Stanwood Stadium).
“We’re just happy to have him around,” Stanwood senior Brad Gee said last week. “He’s a great kid.”
