PREP WRESTLING ROUNDUP: Everett third in regional

YAKIMA — Jerry Contreras and Alec Bird both won individual championships Saturday to lead Everett to third place in the 3A Region IV wrestlng meet at West Valley H.S.

The Seagulls, who won the District 1 title last week, finished 22 points begind regional champion Shadle Park and two behind runner-up North Central, both Spokane-area schools.

Bird won the 215-pound title with a pin. Contreras posted a 14-4 major decision at 160 pounds.

Altogether, Everett qualified seven wrestlers for next weekend’s Mat Classic at the Tacoma Dome.

2B/1B Region I meet: At Tacoma, Darrington finished second in the team competition and advanced six wrestlers to next weekend’s state meet. Kerry Brooks (130 pounds), Jon Fenstermaker (135) and Moe Hyde (285) all won regional championships. Darrington assistant coach Andy West was named the regional assistant of the year.

Girls wrestling

Region I meet: At Sedro-Woolley, Casey Mather (112 pounds) and Laura Charboneau (285) each won individual championships to lead Stanwood to fourth place. Lakewood’s Keely Caldwell was first at 125 pounds for fifth-place Lakewood. JoMae Alewine captured the 103-pound title for sixth-place Lake Stevens.
