Barhoum leads Mavs to top seed

SHORELINE — Margreet Barhoum does it all for the Meadowdale girls basketball team. Her 24 points led the Mavericks to a come-from-behind 62-58 victory over Shorecrest Friday night in the Wesco 3A championship game.

The explosive 5-foot-6 guard even handles the jump ball for Mavs.

“It’s kinda embarrassing,” Barhoum said, “I feel kinda awkward up there. But, it’s fun”

Although she has won just one jump ball this season, that may be the only awkward part of her game. Barhoum runs the fast break, hits the 3, drives the lane, and does whatever it takes to bolster the Meadowdale attack.

With Meadowdale trailing 58-52 and 3 minutes 22 seconds remaining in the game, Barhoum stepped in front of a Shorecrest pass and went the length of the floor for the score despite being fouled. It was a huge moment for the sophomore who, going into the season, took cues from the five Mav seniors.

“I try to let the seniors and the upperclassmen do the leading,” Barhoum said. “I just know what I’m supposed to do and get my job done. If it’s my time to help then I step in.”

Barhoum stepped in and the Mavs closed the game with a 10-0 scoring run to secure Wesco’s No. 1 seed heading into the 3A District 1 playoffs which begin Wednesday night.

Meadowdale (14-7) will host Everett (3-18). Despite the loss, Shorecrest (14-7) also gets to host its first round game against a Northwest League opponent to be determined.

“This game doesn’t mean a whole lot,” Shorecrest coach Ed Wissing said.

Unlike the Mavericks, who are perennial postseason contenders, this was the first time the Scots, who have just one senior on their roster, had a chance to be No. 1.

“It certainly helps that they (the Mavericks) have a group that’s experienced it before,” Wissing said. “We’ll never use that as an excuse. We are a young team but that doesn’t matter. We’ve played a lot of games.”

In the team’s most recent matchup, Meadowdale pressed its way to a 66-46 victory and Julia Fjortoft burned the Scots for four 3 pointers. Friday night the Scots broke the press and held Fjortoft to just one trey and 11 points.

“When they are carving us like they were (you can’t press),” Mav coach Troy Parker said. “They made some great adjustments from the last game.”

The Scots built an 11-point advantage in the third quarter thanks to a balanced scoring attack. Brianne Lasconia and Shannon Schachle led the way with 12 points. Freshman Angel Tulee was the first one off the bench and chipped in 11 points.

But in the final three minutes nothing would fall for the Scots.

“Those are the ones that we kinda have to make to win,” Wissing said. “We tightened up at the wrong time.”

The top two teams in Wesco look like the may be on a collision course in the playoffs.

“The sad part about this game … This would have been a great district championship game,” Parker said. “We may see them down the line.”

Lynnwood 58, Glacier Peak 48: At Shoreline, after dropping the first two regular season matchups between the two teams, Lynnwood got a measure of revenge, upsetting Glacier Peak in overtime to earn the Wesco 3A No. 3 seed to the District 1 playoffs. The Royals’ Megan Cross led all scorers with 21 points. After the teams couldn’t separate by more than one basket in the fourth quarter and the beginning of overtime, the sophomore guard/forward hit a 3-pointer to put Lynnwood up by four and Glacier Peak couldn’t respond. The loss means the Grizzlies now travel to Northwest League No. 1 seed Ferndale Wednesday. Glacier Peak, already without UW recruit Marjorie Heard, was missing her two backups Allie Weathersby (back) and India Smith (wedding). Starting guard Hannah Freitas also sat the first 20 minutes because of a disciplinary issue.
