Hannahan shut down 7-10 days with strained groin

Mariners utility infielder Jack Hannahan had an MRI that revealed a mild strain of his right groin, and manager Don Wakamatsu said he’d be shut down for 7-10 days.

Wakamatsu said Hannahan suffered the injury against the Padres on March 4, and he hasn’t played since.

“We’re looking at least 7-10 (days) right now,” Wakamatsu said. “It’s better than we thought, but we’re going to shut him down for three days of nothing, and then progress. It’s not where it’s pulled off the bone. It’s more in the belly of the muscle. That means it’s not something that’s violent. It’s more of an over-stretch deal.”

The injury could alter the competition for the opening-day backup infield job. Hannahan has played third base most of his career, but the Mariners planned to give him considerable work in the middle of the infield, particularly shortstop, in this camp. The player with the inside track on that now is Josh Wilson, who played 32 games last year at shortstop, five at third and four at second.

As a team, the Mariners have a .358 on-base percentage so far (it was .314 for the regular season last year after they’d posted a .361 on-base percentage at spring training).
  • Felix Hernandez will pitch in the bullpen this morning, his last tuneup before he pitches Sunday against the Rockies in Tucson
