Republican Rep. Mike Hope of Lake Stevens found himself without an opponent today as Democrat John Boerger halted his campaign against the freshman lawmaker.
Boerger spread the news late Wednesday on his Facebook page.
“It is with regret that I must announce the end of my campaign for the State House of Representatives, effective today. Thanks to all of you for your support over the last six months. I look forward to working with you in the future,” he wrote.
Contacted today, Boerger responded with an e-mail citing “family circumstances” as the reason for pulling out.
His name will still appear on the ballot in the 44th Legislative District and votes cast for him will be counted. The deadline to withdraw in order to keep your name off ballots was June 17.
Boerger, who serves on the Lake Stevens School Board, had not built much momentum with his campaign against the first-term Republican. He had only raised $1,300 since announcing his candidacy in January.
He is the second Democrat to exit the race against Hope.
Democrat Lillian Kaufer quit in April. At the time she had raised more money than Boerger and appeared to have a more serious campaign operation in place.
A couple weeks later Kaufer decided to start a new campaign, this one against a Democrat. She is one of three challengers to state Sen. Steve Hobbs, D-Lake Stevens.
