State Rep. Mike Hope, R-Lake Stevens, announced Sunday that he plans to run for Snohomish County executive in 2011.
Hope, 35, is a Seattle police officer who is fresh off winning a second term representing the state’s 44th Legislative District, Position 2.
Democrat Aaron Reardon, 40, of Everett has served as county executive since being elected to a first term in 2003. Reardon previously served in the state Senate and state House of Representatives.
On Nov. 2, Hope won re-election to his house seat with 65.1 percent of the 59,624 votes cast. He essentially was running unopposed.
Democratic opponent John Boerger announced his intention to withdraw before the primary in August, but the deadline already had passed and his name stayed on the ballot. He received about 34.7 percent of the vote in the general election.
Hope was a central part of the initiative campaign to amend the state constitution to allow judges to deny bail for some violent offenders. The measure passed with nearly 85 percent of the vote. The Lakewood Law Enforcement Memorial Act is named for four Lakewood police officers killed last year by a man out on bail on a charge of child rape.
