Prep boys basketball: Kamiak 67, Meadowdale 48

MUKILTEO — A hot start by Ron Manchester helped Kamiak’s boys basketball team shake off any opening-game jitters in a season-opening nonleague boys basketball win ovrer Meadowdale Tuesday night.

Manchester scored 11 of his 24 points in the first quarter and canned a couple of 3-point baskets. Nicholas Kussman added 16 points and four assists in the Knights’ win, while Imaan Vicente led Kamiak with eight rebounds.

Like many high school openers, this game saw some sloppy play with an abundance of fouls and turnovers, according to Kamiak head coach Cory West.

The Knights did a better job of taking advantage of the fouls, however. They were 12-for-19 from the free-throw line while Meadowdale managed just 11 of 24 from the charity stripe.

Meadowdale tried to contain the Knights offense with its 1-3-1 zone throughout the contest but had a tough time doing so, falling behind 34-27 at half and faring even worse on the offensive glass as Kamiak pulled down 34 defensive rebounds.

“I thought we played hard from beginning to end,” Kamiak head coach Corey West said, “It’s a tight-knit group that played very well together as a team. We still have a long way to go,”
