LYNNWOOD — Dylan Vargas scored a game-high 18 points and Jack Bonner added some clutch free throws in the final minutes of the game to lead Glacier Peak to the 61-57 Wesco 3A win over Meadowdale Tuesday at Meadowdale High School.
“Glacier Peak’s one of the best teams in the league,” Meadowdale head coach Chad McGuire said, “and they’re well coached. They can put five guys on the floor that can score.”
Vargas’s 18 points helped keep the Grizzlies (2-0 league, 3-2 overall) close in the back and forth game. Bonner, who was 9-for-9 from the free throw line, hit four free throws late to all but seal the Mavericks’ fate.
“Vargas hit some big threes,” McGuire said, “and Bonner made his free throws.”
Tyce Tallman had 14 points to lead a balanced Meadowdale (1-1, 1-5) attack that had two other players — Sean Hennessey (13 points) and Spencer Linton (11 points) — score in double figures. Two other players scored nine and seven points respectively.
“You look at our box score and we had pretty even scoring,” McGuire said. “Three guys with double figures…I like the fact that we spread it out pretty well.
“Any time you can have multiple people score then it makes it tougher to defend.”
The Mavericks actually jumped out to the early lead, and had a 19-17 advantage going into halftime. Glacier Peak came out after the break and outscored Meadowdale by three points in each of the last two quarters to cement its come-from-behind victory.
“Glacier Peak went ahead a little in the second half,” McGuire said. “Then we came back and got it close. It was close at the end. They made a couple key plays down the stretch and made their free throws.”
