EVERETT — A report of a shooting at an apartment complex on W. Casino Road in Everett forced seven schools to go into lockdown Wednesday morning.
A man was found dead in an apartment in the 1000 block of W. Casino Road, Everett police Lt. John DeRousse said.
Police received a 911 call at 11:08 a.m. Wednesday from someone reporting a shooting, DeRousse said.
They were interviewing the caller Wednesday to verify if he was a witness, DeRousse said.
The cause and manner of death is under investigation, he said.
Law officers using a police dog searched the area for a possible suspect, DeRousse said.
Four Mukilteo School District campuses briefly went into a lockdown at about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday because of police activity in the W. Casino Road area, district spokesman Andy Muntz said. Three schools from the Everett district did the same.
Everett police asked that Horizon Elementary, Challenger Elementary, Explorer Middle School and ACES High School lock their doors as police officers searched for a suspect in the area, Muntz said.
Cascade High, Evergreen Middle and Emerson Elementary in Everett also went into lockdown.
Police called the lockdown off shortly after noon, Muntz said.
That stretch of Casino Road has been home to several high-profile violent crimes in recent years. Several home-invasion robberies have been reported on W. Casino Road since April, including one on the same block as Wednesday’s shooting. Some of those involved people going into the wrong apartment looking for drugs or drug money.
The Rev. Joseph Fehlen of the Sound Everett Foursquare Church works with children and families from Casino Road. He attributes a high crime rate to the fact that it is a high-density, low-income urban setting.
It is a community that tries hard to improve, organizing homework clubs that can attract 80 students on some days, he said. Often, when people are able to improve their lives, they move away to more affluent neighborhoods.
“The majority of the people who live here are good people,” he said.
