Roller skates banned in downtown Everett

People have complained that’s illegal to bicycle on the sidewalks in downtown Everett. It’s also apparently illegal to roller skate in the central business district — even on the side of the road.

Jeffrey Crowfoot complained to the City Council last night after he was stopped by police for inline skating from his job downtown to his house in the Port Gardner Neighborhood. He thought that prohibition was odd, given the city’s desire to promote non-motorized forms of transportation and the more pressing crime problems in his neighborhood.

A few of the elected officials were surprised by that law too. Councilman Paul Roberts said that while he understood why police would be obligated to enforce laws on the books, “given our interest in helping people get from here to there without a car, it would be timely to look at this.”
