LAKE STEVENS — People in Lake Stevens can chat up their local firefighters and also learn about blood cancers Saturday.
A team from Snohomish County Fire District 8 in Lake Stevens is competing next month at the Firefighter Stairclimb challenge. The annual event at the Columbia Center tower in Seattle raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Several Snohomish County fire departments plan to compete.
The Lake Stevens team will be working out on a stairclimber from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at Haggen Food and Pharmacy at 8915 Market Place NE. They’ll be collecting donations at the event to help cancer patients and their families.
They enjoy training for the friendly race, but it’s really about raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, firefighter and team captain Lisa Defenbaugh said.
“I can’t tell you how many people they’ve helped,” she said.
Throughout the day, at least one firefighter or paramedic will be on the stairclimber, Defenbaugh said.
People who stop by can get free healthy snacks and blood pressure checks, along with information about blood cancers and other diseases. They are invited to ask the crews any questions they have about health, diseases and firefighting in general, she said.
Those working out on Saturday plan to don partial firefighting gear on the stairclimber to up the ante of entertainment, Defenbaugh said. They’ll try to keep on as much gear as they can without overheating.
“We’ll try to make it as fun as possible,” she said.
