Terrace advances to state regional

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Nalin Sood believes his team’s depth makes it a difficult one to scout since his Mountlake Terrace basketball team goes 10 players deep with everyone capable of scoring.

The Hawks were a tough matchup against Meadowdale Saturday in a 56-49 Terrace victory. As a result they stay alive to pose a challenge for their next opponent in the 3A state regionals next Friday at Marysville-Pilchuck H.S.

“We want to believe in a team consciousness,” Sood said. “No one is bigger than anyone else on this team.”

The closest thing they have to a star is senior guard Zach Karels, whose 10 points were tied for best on the team with Ryan Swanstrom. Karels leads the team in scoring with around 12 points per game and Swanstrom was playing in just his sixth game of the year after coming back from injury.

Meadowdale trailed by seven at half and Dylan Buck tried to bring the Mav’s back single-handedly, scoring seven of the game’s first nine points of the half, but the Hawks defense regained composure and they held on. Buck led all scorers with 13 points.

“Before the game I said I didn’t want to play them,” Sood said of the Mavs. “But, I’m glad we did because even if we lost we have a lot of respect for (Meadowdale coach) Chad McGuire and those guys.”

The Hawks coach gave a lot of credit to his assistant staff who believed in his team even when his own resolve was shaken during the team’s seven-game losing streak earlier in the season.

“They reminded me, ‘It’s now what they weren’t doing. It’s what they are capable of doing,” Sood said.
