Glacier Peak girls headed to Tacoma

MARYSVILLE — One and done.

Done as in already headed to Tacoma.

In its first state playoff game in team history, the Glacier Peak girls basketball team used some clutch free throw shooting and key defensive stops in the fourth quarter to hold off Mercer Island and punch a ticket to the Tacoma Dome.

Glacier Peak beat the Islanders 69-64 in a Class 3A girls state regional game Friday night at Marysville-Pilchuck High School. Glacier Peak advances to play at 9 a.m. on March 3 in Tacoma.

“They made us work for it,” said Glacier Peak girls head coach Brian Hill. “They made a great run and we were able to fight it off.

Because the Grizzlies are a No. 1 seed all they needed to do was win and they advanced to the round of 16. But it wasn’t easy. The Grizzlies needed to hit 20 of 25 free throws in the fourth quarter to outscore Mercer Island 24-20 in the quarter and stave off a furious comeback by the Islanders. Katie Hawkins was key down the stretch, going 6-for-9 from the free throw line and coming down with a pair of big rebounds late in the game.

Glacier Peak outscored Mercer Island 22-8 in the second quarter in building a 34-23 lead. But the Grizzlies need some fourth quarter nerves after Mercer Island stormed back in the third quarter. Behind the shooting of Jae Shin, Mercer Island outscored GP 21-11 in the third quarter and actually was within a point at 53-52 after a Shin 3-pointer midway through the fourth quarter.

But Hawkins’ free throws and a big basket by Taylor Rasmussen held off the Mercer Island comeback.

Hawkins finished with 20 points to pace the Grizzlies, while Rasmussen added 14 and Becca Smith contributed 13.
