Bowlers raise money for mentors
A team of bowlers from Comcast raised $5,500 at the Bowl for Kids’ Sake fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Snohomish County.
More than 60 people gathered pledges over the past month and joined in this Bowl for Kids’ Sake fundraiser, held March 6 at Evergreen Lanes
Big Brothers Big Sisters provides free, one-on-one mentoring programs to the children and families of Snohomish County. Comcast is a partner to Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.
HONORS
Boy Scout earns rank of Eagle
Brian Slack, son of Patric and Carmen Slack, recently was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout.
To earn the Eagle rank, Slack earned 44 merit badges, easily surpassing the 21 required for the award. His Eagle Scout project involved building new benches for the Viking Stage at the Stanwood-Camano Fairgrounds. He also served as a leader in his troop.
Slack was among the 26 Eagle Scouts from all over the state chosen to attend a banquet where they were honored by state Attorney General Rob McKenna and Lt. Gov. Brad Owen.
Slack is a freshman at Everett High School and a member of Troop 86 in Stanwood.
Club honors seven women
In honor of the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day, the Zonta Club of Everett honored seven for their work in the community on behalf of women.
The following women were honored:
Lois Brown and Lynette Gardiner Kidd are cofounders of the Mukilteo Community Garden. The garden originated as a place where single moms can get fresh produce.
Kay Field is a pro-bono attorney for Snohomish County Legal Services. She has helped more than 350 clients from the YWCA Pathways for Women programs and community clients in family law issues over the past nine years.
Kerri Mallams is the founder of Citrine Health and Women’s Wellness Center, which offers health screenings and counseling to connect women to low-cost health insurance, food assistance and wellness education.
Sarah Sweeney is an advocate against sex-trafficking through the Not for Sale Campaign and other organizations.
Carol Schillios is the owner of Fabric of Life and micro-finance consultant. She supports fair trade and female artists and volunteers as a speaker to service organizations.
Carol Wheeler has been a member of Soroptimist International for 20 years and a member of the Girl Scouts for 25 years.
Student wins ballroom contest
Hannah Gasinski-Shinsato, a freshman at Glacier Peak High School, and partner Elijah Clayton, of Renton, placed at the NDCA National Ballroom competition for the fourth year.
They placed first in the youth division standard pre-champ event dancing the waltz, tango and quick step.
They also placed second in their own age division, ages 13 to 14, in the national championship level, dancing the waltz, tango, quick step, foxtrot and the Viennese waltz.
The team also placed third in the Latin dances in the youth pre-champ event, dancing the samba, cha-cha and pasodoble.
The competition was held at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
Locals win in sheet metal competition
Casey Wilson-Williams, Matthew Postma and Nick Bundy, from Sheet Metal Workers Local 66 of Everett, placed first in their categories at the International Sheet Metal Competition held in Las Vegas.
More than 275 sheet metal workers came from across the United States and Canada to compete in six categories. The workers from Washington took home half the first-place earnings.
Wilson-Williams received first place in the Testing and Balancing category for the second consecutive year.
Postma received first place in the architectural category.
Bundy received first place in the HVAC category.
Restaurant owner honored with award
Budd Gould, president and owner of Anthony’s restaurant, received the first Budd Gould Tribute Award at the 25th annual Epicurean Affair at Anthony’s HomePort in Everett.
Gould and a group of community volunteers created the Epicurean Affair event 25 years ago and have raised more than $1 million for community health services and training.
He was recognized for his contributions benefitting Providence Regional Medical Center Everett.
This year’s event raised $102,000 with proceeds benefiting patient programs at the Providence Regional Cancer Partnership.
Locals place in speech contest
Barry Klarman placed first in the International Speech Contest held at the Snohomish County Toastmasters Club 690.
He gave a speech about finding passion, purpose and drive as a Toastmasters member.
Jenny Lamb placed first in the evaluation contest. Caroline Barlow received second place.
