A roller-coaster ride

The Boeing Co. is putting its 747-8 through demanding testing before putting it into service.

However, the video the company posted today looks more like fun than work.

In the video, the 747-

8 Freighter goes through flight loads survey testing, which validates the airplane’s structural capability. The testing includes pitching the plane down and pulling it back up, creating a roller coaster ride-like effect for crew members on board.

Andy Hammer, Boeing 747-8 flight test manager, describes flight load survey testing as “beating the devil out of an airplane.”

The testing is to help Boeing gain approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to fly its 747-8 Freighter commercially. The company hopes to deliver the first 747-8 freighter, as well as the first 747-8 passenger plane, this year.
