EVERETT — Two people were arrested Monday after a 15-minute police chase wound its way from Lake Stevens to north Everett.
The chase began just before 11 a.m. near N. Machias Road and 16th Street NE, east of Lake Stevens.
It started when a Snohomish County sheriff’s deputy approac
hed a green sedan. He suspected it was being used for drug activity, sheriff’s spokeswoman Rebecca Hover said.
A man was in the driver’s seat and a woman was outside the car, which was parked near some ball fields.
The man began revving the engine, and the woman got in the car. The driver ignored the deputy’s orders to turn off the engine and began to drive toward the deputy, who feared he would be run over, Hover said.
The chase was on, heading west through Lake Stevens and along the U.S. 2 trestle into Everett.
The pursuit path wound around north Everett, eventually ending when another deputy rammed the sedan, causing it to spin out and stall.
The driver, 38, had two felony warrants for his arrest, Hover said. He was expected to be booked into Snohomish County Jail for investigation of eluding police. He also is under investigation for allegedly trying to harm the deputy, she said.
His passenger, 22, was booked for investigation of obstruction and rendering criminal assistance.
The chase caused quite the stir on the Everett Community College campus. The school was placed in lockdown for a short time.
Student Booie Walkerling was walking across the college’s sky bridge when she heard a car zoom through a parking lot and spin around. Seconds later, police cars were all around campus.
At one point, Walkerling could see the speeding car.
“He was flooring it. His muffler was off, and he was driving on rims,” she said. “I’m still shaking.”
Two other EvCC students were in a Jeep Liberty at the intersection of Colby Avenue and Eighth Street. A sheriff’s cruiser collided with the Jeep, Hover said. Nobody was injured.
Everett police detectives are investigating that crash alongside deputies.
