The Boeing Co. opened its new 787 final assembly facility in South Carolina this morning.
About 1,000 Boeing employees, who will begin assembling their first 787 next month, were on hand for the ribbon-cutting.
“Airline customers from around the world will come to the South Carolina Lowcountry to take delivery of their 787s, and we look forward to demonstrating what ‘made with pride in South Carolina’ is all about,” said Jack Jones, vice president and general manager of Boeing South Carolina.
The ceremony comes as Boeing faces a challenge by the National Labor Relations Board over the South Carolina site. The labor board has accused Boeing of picking the North Charleston location in retaliation against its Machinists for strikes here in the Puget Sound region.
A hearing on the labor board’s complaint is scheduled to start Tuesday in Seattle.
