The Snohomish County Council has decided to take no action toward imposing a moratorium on collective medical marijuana gardens.
The council’s decision followed a discussion with county attorneys, Council Chairman Dave Somers said Thursday. A moratorium, they feared, would have put the county in a bind between state rules, which allow groups of authorized medical marijuana patients to form collective pot gardens, and federal rules, under which cannabis remains an illegal drug.
Before the law took effect last week, County Executive Aaron Reardon sent a memo urging the council to enact a 12-month moratorium.
Everett and other local cities have passed temporary bans on collective pot gardens so that city planners and legal staff could further examine the issue. The delay also could give state lawmakers the chance to amend the law when they reconvene next year.
