The Seahawks have reached an agreement with former Raiders TE Zach Miller. ESPN first reported the news and the team has subsequently confirmed that Miller will sign.
Miller, 25, an elite pass-catching tight end, has caught 126 passes over the past two seasons for 1,490 yards and eight touchdowns. His addition brings into question the future of John Carlson, who like Miller is better suited as a pass catcher than a blocking TE. The agreement comes a day after Miller came to Seattle for a visit with the Seahawks, a visit that no doubt included a strong recruiting pitch from offensive line coach Tom Cable, who was previously Miller’s head coach in Oakland.
The move gives Seattle and new quarterback Tarvaris Jackson another new weapon following last week’s addition receiver Sidney Rice, and the Seahawks have now landed one of the top receivers and tight ends on the free agent market.
UPDATE
ESPN is reporting that Miller’s deal is worth $34 million over five years, including $17 million guaranteed. That’s some big money for a tight end.
