As the November general election draws nearer, a few things stand out about the bankrolls built up by the two men who hope to be Snohomish County executive come January.
First, Aaron Reardon, the incumbent Democrat, has reported raising roughly double the money amassed by his Republican chall
enger Mike Hope. Maybe more important: Reardon reports much of his cash is left — about $7 for every buck that Hope, a state legislator and Seattle cop, reports as yet unspent.
The breakdown on who is backing the candidates is worth a look (see box at right for data gleaned from the state Public Disclosure Commission), but holds few surprises. Both candidates appeal to developers and builders. Both have support from aerospace, telecommunications and other core businesses. Both campaigns have their partisan yell squads with people willing to open their wallets.
Perhaps the greatest contrast, though, comes from comparing how communities are pouring money into the campaigns.
Fully three-fourths of the roughly $220,000 Reardon has raised traces to funders reported from outside Snohomish County, data show. Seattle, it seems, is Reardon’s kind of town. He’s reported raising $10,000 more there than he’s gathered in the county where he serves as executive.
By contrast, eight out of every $10 Hope has reported raising comes from within Snohomish County. Snohomish and Lake Stevens — a couple of the communities he represents in the Legislature — factor big in giving Hope nearly twice as much locally raised cash as Reardon.
Everett, the county seat, is a toss-up. There, Reardon reports having raised about $23,000 compared to Hope’s $20,000 and change.
