Closing winter steelhead fishing early in many Puget Sound rivers and preventing anglers from keeping sturgeon in the Sound and its tributaries are among new fishing rules proposed for next year by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The department will hold a public meeting in Mill Creek and three other locations next week to discuss the proposed new rules.
One proposal would close fishing early for steelhead in the Nooksack, Skagit, Stillaguamish, Snohomish, Green and Puyallup rivers to protect wild fish,
Another would prevent anglers from keeping sturgeon caught in Puget Sound and its rivers. It would continue to allow a catch and release fishery.

The Mill Creek meeting will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the agency’s office at 16018 Mill Creek Blvd.
On Monday, there will be a meeting in Aberdeen at the Rotary Log Pavilion, 409 South Monroe; on Wednesday it will be in Olympia at the Natural Resources Building, 1111 Washington St. S.E,; and on Thursday it will be in Spokane at the department’s office at 2315 North Discovery Place, Spokane Valley.
All meetings will be from 6 to 8 p.m.
During the meetings, the public can discuss the proposals with staff and submit written comments.
