Glacier Peak sweeps Wesco 3A cross country titles

MARYSVILLE — To fully appreciate the dominance of the Glacier Peak’s girls cross country team, one only had to be at Saturday’s medal ceremony.

Of the top 10 spots on the podium, seven were dressed in the colors of blue and gray of Glacier Peak as the Grizzlies dominated the Wesco 3A girls r

ace, scoring just 19 points to Oak Harbor’s 66.

Glacier Peak’s Amy-Eloise Neale won the race in 17:48, setting a meet record and just seconds off of a course record, with teammates Katie Bianchini and Marlee Rothschild finishing behind her in second and third place, respectively. The Grizzlies are so deep that the ninth and 10th place finishes of Samantha Northrop and Katherine Dittman didn’t even count since they were the sixth and seventh GP runners to finish.

Shorecrest Gigi Vujovich, Meadowdale’s Haley Suarez and Marysville Getchell’s Rachael Lefstad broke up Glacier Peak’s control of the top-10, finishing fourth, fifth and eighth, respectively.

Led by Hannah Bressler’s 11th-place finish, Oak Harbor squeezed five runners between 11th and 18th to take second. Marysville Getchell scored 101 points in its first Wesco divisional race.

The Wesco 3A race has no effect on next Saturday’s Class 3A District 1 meet at South Whidbey H.S.

Though not as authoritative, Glacier Peak’s boys also won the 3A boys team title despite not placing a runner in the top-5. Michael Matwichuk finished seventh for the Grizzlies, who placed five runners in the top-14.

Everett’s Mason Newton won the 3A boys race by 21 seconds, finishing in a time of 16:24.
