The Seahawks released backup tackle Tyler Polumbus Tuesday. Polumbus, who Seattle acquired in a trade with Detroit prior to last season, started seven games for the Seahawks as a left tackle and left guard, and started both playoff games at left guard.
He served as Russell Okung’s backup at left guard this year, but only has been on the field for a handful of snaps this season after starting three preseason games. The Seahawks had 10 offensive linemen on their roster, a large number, particularly as injuries take their toll. With Polumbus gone, undrafted rookie Jarriel King becomes the backup at left tackle. Pete Carroll has repeatedly raved about King, who originally signed with the New York Giants out of South Carolina, but he wasn’t initially healthy when he signed with Seattle. Now that King has shown progress in practice, however, the Seahawks decided Polumbus was expendable.
No corresponding roster move was announced, but the Seahawks do have two players on the physically unable to perform list that could come back this week: CB Roy Lewis and WR Deon Butler. Given the recent season-ending injuries suffered by both Marcus Trufant and Walter Thurmond, there’s a good chance Lewis could be added to the active roster soon.
