The Seahawks begin the second half of their season with this week’s game against the Baltimore Ravens, but before practice got underway, Pete Carroll had his usual Wednesday press conference. As has been the case the past couple of weeks, there hasn’t been a ton of injury news other than the status of still hurting QB Tarvaris Jackson, who will once again likely be limited to some degree this week in practice, but should play Sunday.
“The gains are very slight,” Carroll said. “It’s all about how he feels from one day to the next. His strength is there, which is a really good sign… It’s really a day-to-day thing. He didn’t throw a ball in the walkthrough today, and he’ll throw some today and we’ll see how tomorrow goes and we’ll go one day at a time.
“We’re not out of the woods on this thing yet, but he’s managing it as well as it could possibly be managed and his attitude is great about it.”
Carroll had mentioned Monday that receivers Sidney Rice and Mike Williams were banged up. Williams will practice today, Carroll said, but Rice will not. Even so, Rice, who is “Just a little banged up,” according to Carroll, should be fine for Sunday’s game.
“Sidney will be held back some today and we’ll get him back tomorrow,” Carroll said. “We’re just trying to get him one more day of break. He went through the walkthrough and all of that, and he’ll be fine for the weekend, but we’re just trying to manage it through.”
TE Cameron Morra (knee/toe), who missed Sunday’s game, will not practice today or likely tomorrow, Carroll said, but could return Friday and has a chance to return to action this weekend. As for receiver Kris Durham, who went on injured reserve yesterday, Carroll said the rookie will need surgery to repair a torn labrum: “He’s had a labrum tear that he’s been dealing with for a long time and it just needs to be fixed.’
Receiver Deon Butler is back on the active roster, but there’s a good chance he won’t be active on Sunday as he gets back up to speed.
“We’re going to just work him in,” Carroll said. “He’s done very well. He’s only been with us for three weeks now, but he’s done very well. He’s starting to fit in. We know that he’s a tremendous speed player and a guy that has come through and made a lot of things happen for us last season, so we’re anxious to fit him back in… I’m not sure how much we can play him yet, but it’s good to get him back on the roster.”
Carroll also clarified that he doesn’t plan on making any changes along the offensive line this week. LG Robert Gallery has struggled some since coming back from groin surgery, and his backup, Paul McQuistan, was solid while filling in, but he’ll still be the starter Sunday, Carroll said: “No, we’re not making any changes… Robert’s doing all right, but he needs to play with better consistency.”
