SNOHOMISH — The city will have a new police chief starting Jan. 1.
Officials on Wednesday named Snohomish County Sheriff’s Lt. John Flood as the city’s next top cop.
Snohomish is transitioning from running its own police department to becoming part of the sheriff’s office. The selection of a police chief was one of the last big decisions in the move. The city made a recommendation to Sheriff John Lovick, who made the final choice.
Only a few more steps remain, city manager Larry Bauman said.
The contract with the sheriff’s office must be approved by the County Council. It’s slated for a vote next week.
Background checks also are under way for current Snohomish police officers. Most are expected to become sheriff’s deputies, but they must meet county hiring standards.
It also will take time to switch over management of the city’s police fleet and computer systems, Bauman said.
Flood has been with the sheriff’s office for more than 20 years. He has served as the south precinct assistant commander, as a lieutenant with the Snohomish Regional Drug Task Force and as Gold Bar’s police chief.
Snohomish officials and community leaders were impressed with Flood’s police management experience and communication skills, Bauman said.
Flood’s swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for 6 p.m. Jan. 3 at the Snohomish Senior Center.
