SNOHOMISH — A popular motorcycle show once forced out of the city will be back again this year.

On Tuesday, the Snohomish City Council unanimously voted to allow the Antique and Classic Motorcycle Show to return. It is expected to be scheduled for May 20 and could attract between 8,000 and 10,000 people to downtown.

The show is returning after a four-year absence when its organizers, the Sky Valley chapter of the American Bikers Aimed Toward Education, or ABATE, had a disagreement with the city about police costs.

These costs have decreased now that the city has signed a contract with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.

The free event is expected to feature live music and display a variety of motorcycles.

The group last held the show in 2008 before moving to Sultan and then to Everett. In 2011, the show was canceled after the group failed to get sponsors to cover expenses.

At the time, the Snohomish Police Department was charging more than $30,000 for police services when it has previously paid $5,000. The city it increased the fee to cover costs that were previously absorbed by the city.

This year, the Sheriff’s Office will deal directly with the group over security costs, saving money for the city.

ABATE hosted the first classic motorcycle show in 1997.
