Lynnwood’s rec center earns LEED certification

LYNNWOOD -- The Recreation Center earned a LEED Silver certification, the city's first capital project to receive the award.
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design awards are given in recognition for implementing measurable "green" building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions. They are given by the U.S. Green Building Council.
"The Recreation Center provides opportunities for wellness and enjoyment in our community with an emphasis on environmental sustainability. This is a proud moment for the city," said Lynn Sordel, director of parks, recreation and cultural arts for the city.
The renovation of the 33-year-old building, with a total project cost of $25 million, added 16,000 square feet with a focus on aquatics and fitness, for a total of 44,800 square feet.
Energy efficiency and environmental design elements were incorporated throughout the project.
Those features include low-flow toilets, shower heads with timed shutoff valves, high-efficiency boilers and heat pumps, dehumidification units with heat recovery systems, a water-saving pool filtration system and a solar preheating system that prepares water for use.
Outside, rain gardens, native drought-tolerant landscaping, a water- conserving irrigation system and designated parking for low-emitting and fuel- efficient vehicles contributed to the award.
During the renovation, contractors also used recycled materials in building furnishings, playground equipment, restroom accessories and construction materials.
