Prep girls tennis: Snohomish 4, Stanwood 3

STANWOOD—Last year’s 4A State runner-up in singles, Megan Lalone of Stanwood, and her partner KT Elliot defeated the doubles team of Julia Young and Gabby Wilson in straight sets 6-2, 7-6 on Monday afternoon, yet it was not enough as Snohomish defeated the Spartans 4-3 in a Wesco North match.

In the two other doubles matches the Panthers Christie Clarke and Jen Gronewegen defeated Danica Nash and Sara Schlagel in three sets 5-7, 6-3, 6-3; and Lexi Armbruster and Amy Stevens, also of Snohomish, beat Caryn Nash and Zanetta Uy 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.

In singles play, Heather Smith of Stanwood defeated Meredith Coad 6-2, 6-2, the Spartans Christine Wolf defeated Audrey Zahina 7-6, 6-3. The Panthers were able to edge out the other two singles matches with Alexis Stockwell defeating Rachel Rich 6-3, 6-2 and Caroline Dreher defeating Elle Shaughnessy 6-0, 6-2.

With the win, Snohomish remains atop of the Wesco North standings with a league record of 4-0. Stanwood falls to 2-1 in league with the loss.

The Panthers next match is at home against Marysville Pillchuck, Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., while the Spartans remain at home today to play Lake Stevens.
