Regarding the Friday column by James McCusker, “Two things Congress can agree on to fix budget mess”: Gee! I sure wish I was as smart as Mr. McCusker. As smart and mature as his tone indicates that he is, he has not supported this comment:
“Conservatives claim that government stimulus efforts are ineffective — and they’re right, too.”
The most recent national job numbers indicate that public sector jobs are still being lost. That is the main driver of our lack of growth at this point. Replacing those jobs, government stimulus if you will, would certainly help the economy. Wisconsin, for example, has the worst job losses in the country over the past year. And the public sector job losses there are terrible. Replacing the public sector jobs lost in Wisconsin would stimulate their economy. That is true for the nation.
When it comes to economics, I would much rather trust Paul Krugman. Mr. McCusker has heard of him, I assume. He says stimulus, in the form of replacing the lost public sector jobs, will help. I suppose that it is impossible that a Nobel Prize winning economist has a weaker grasp on what will help this economy than McCusker. Not!
