Scouting Report
At 3-7, it would be tough to say the Seattle Storm are rolling, but they are certainly starting to put things together.
The Storm are winners of two consecutive games, including a 65-62 victory over the previously undefeated and defending WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx this past Sunday at KeyArena.
The Lynx and the Los Angeles Sparks have separated themselves from the rest of the Western Conference, leaving teams like the Storm and the Silver Stars to fight it out for third place in the West.
The Silver Stars come into tonight’s contest with a two-game lead on the Storm for third place. Seattle is currently tied with Phoenix for fourth. Of the three teams, the Storm appear to be the team with the most momentum.
The biggest key to Seattle’s turnaround after the worst start (1-7) in franchise history has been the revival of the offense. Point guard Sue Bird has put up back-to-back 20-point games after struggling for much of the early season. Tina Thompson has been exactly what the Storm have wanted her to be when they signed her in the offseason, a veteran presence that can be called upon to score when needed. Guard Tanisha Wright is starting to get her offensive game going as well, opening up the floor for other players with her ability to drive to the basket.
Bird leads the team, averaging 12.6 points per game, and Thompson is not far behind, averaging 10.2. All of the other players on the roster average single digits, but the team has become more balanced offensively in recent games.
In order for the Storm to win their third consecutive game, the defense has to crack down on Sophia Young and Becky Hammon. Both players average more than 15 points a game, Young leading the team at 15.6 and Hammon right behind with 15.3.
