GRANITE FALLS – Crews on Friday were fighting a small forest fire on Green Mountain, in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, east of Granite Falls.
The fire was reported late Thursday afternoon. Smoke apparently was visible from Granite Falls, Darrington District Ranger Peter Forbes said.
The fire was burning at the 3,800-foot level on the mountain. On Friday, it was estimated to be about a half-acre in size, he said.
Snohomish County has multiple peaks named “Green Mountain.” The fire is not on the Green Mountain near Darrington where a controversy is playing out over the fate of a historic fire lookout.
Investigators couldn’t immediately determine the cause of the fire, but it appears to have started from human activity, Forbes said.
The weather on the mountain on Friday morning was cool and damp. Crews were hopeful that would stymie the fire’s growth. They expected to be on scene for several days.
By Friday afternoon, they also had requested a bulldozer to help clear the road.
No injuries were reported.
