Reader seeks 4-H recipes from 1913

Because a number of Forum cooks have indicated their fondness for old recipes — the treasured heirlooms handed down in the family, those taken from old cookbooks and recipe pamphlets or little booklets — we’ve decided to give those who are interested a chance to research or raid these old recipe collections in their possession or otherwise track down a certain special type.

That said, Dorothy P. Gross, of Edmonds, says, “As a longtime subscriber to The Herald and reader of your column, I know that you and your readers’ expertise extends well beyond recipes. Therefore, I am hoping that you can help me with a request that has come from a 4-H leader in Manitoba, Canada.

“The writer is seeking ‘historic 4-H recipes from around 1913.’

“The members of her group are planning a recipe calendar for the year 2013, and they would like to have some 4-H recipes from the last century to include along with their new recipes.”

Winding up, Dorothy says, “Without any 4-H connections myself, I’m appealing to you for any tips or direction that you might be able to give on this question. Thank you in advance for any help that you might be able to give.”

So, OK, then, former 4-H-ers and others interested in this recipe challenge, if you can come up with some recipes to share, don’t hesitate to send them along to Judyrae Kruse at the Forum, c/o The Herald, P.O. Box 930, Everett, WA 98206.

Please remember that all letters and e-mail must include a name, complete address with ZIP code and telephone number with area code.

No exceptions and sorry, but no response to e-mail by return e-mail; send to kruse@heraldnet.com.

Now, another SOS for other recipes that may be just as hard to come up with.

Patrick Vanderpool tells us, “We used to go to Seven Lakes Pizza House at Smokey Point and order the yuppy pizza. It had a white sauce and was one of the best we’ve ever had. This pizza house can’t be found anywhere else.

“Also, O’Brien’s Turkey House at Island Crossing in Arlington had the best barbecue sauce they served with their barbecued turkey.

“Is there any chance someone could find the recipes for the pizza and the barbecue sauce?”

You know what to do, Forum cooks — if you can help, send the recipes or info to the Forum at the above address.

The next Forum will appear in Monday’s Good Life section.
