Trinity Lutheran adding a fourth varsity sport

Trinity Lutheran College announced Monday that it’s adding track and field as its fourth varsity sport.

The Everett-based school has hired Everett Community College track and field/cross country coach Matt Koenigs to head the new program. The Eagles plan to field their first men’s and women’s teams this spring.

“Scholarships will be available for spring semester transfers who wish to compete during the 2013 season, but the inaugural team this spring is expected to comprise of mostly the distance runners who were already on (the school’s) cross country roster,” Trinity Lutheran said in a press release. “The 2013-2014 recruiting class will focus on the addition of athletes who will participate in the sprints/jumps and throws events, though those athletes will certainly have an events coach and a place to train and participate immediately.”

The team will train at Everett Memorial Stadium.

“Seven years ago, when I began coaching at Everett Community College, there was neither a two-year nor a four-year college track and field program in Snohomish County; now there is one of each,” Koenigs said in the press release. “We are excited about this new opportunity that we can provide to our track and field community.”

Koenings will coach both the Everett CC and Trinity Lutheran track and field teams.

“It’s actually proven to be a relatively easy balance to strike so far,” Koenigs said in an email. “The greatest initial challenge is recruiting women as I’ve graduated most of my EVCC women and need to recruit an entire squad for both the Trinity and EvCC teams. Once we get that first big recruiting class at Trinity, though, that will be a much easier recruiting job each year as in a normal year the recruiting classes will be much smaller.”

Trinity Lutheran now offers cross country, golf, soccer and track and field for both male and female athletes.
