When the small town of Nome, Alaska was ravaged by an outbreak of diphtheria in the winter of 1925, teams of sled dogs delivered the nearest supply of a life-saving serum from Anchorage, nearly 1,000 miles away.
Since 1973, the life-saving voyage is commemorated each year with the Iditarod Trail Dog Sled Race – a competitive trek from Anchorage to Nome.
