Barry’s hit gives Lake Stevens softball victory

LAKE STEVENS — With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning, Megan Barry connected on a single that drove in the game-winning run to lead Lake Stevens to a 3-2 victory over Jackson in a Wesco 4A game played on Thursday.

Barry’s clutch base hit followed a pattern that Vikings head coach Adrianne Lartz has noticed throughout the season.

“Megan is only a sophomore and she’s just got so much potential as a hitter,” said Lartz. “The bases were loaded today and she did her job. She’s been clutch all year for us.”

Thursday’s game also included two standout complete-game performances in the pitcher’s circle from Timberwolves freshman starter Sophia Frost and Lake Stevens’ Sierra Card. Card threw 143 pitches in 10 innings, striking out 11 and allowing no runs after giving up two in the first inning to pick up her fifth win of the season.

“My assistant coach and I kind of laughed,” Lartz said. “We looked at (Sierra) and started warming up our other pitcher in the first inning. Later in the game I wondered again if we should be warming someone up. … But Sierra is a vet. Tonight was one of her best games. She’s a tough kid and has a lot of heart.”

Frost, although on the losing end, nearly matched Card’s outing, allowing one earned run and striking out seven.

“She’s a good pitcher,” Lartz said on viewing Frost’s perfomance from the opposing bench. “She’s pretty impressive as a freshman to pitch (10) innings and not allow a hit until the fourth inning. Just impressive for someone that age.”
