EVERETT — Naval Station Everett has canceled Independence Day celebrations at the base.
Over the years, the Navy has offered the public a chance to visit the base and tour a ship as a part of July 4th festivities.
“After careful consideration, the decision has been made to cancel the event this year in order to meet budget constraints,” said base spokeswoman Kristin Ching.
The decision is separate from the Navy’s announcement that it will cancel Fleet Week ship visits and Seafair performances by the Blue Angels.
However, shortfalls caused by the federal budget sequestration are forcing the Navy to cut back on community outreach programs in this year, Ching said. The mission of Naval Station Everett is to support fleet forces and sailor readiness, along with providing services to military families.
Last year, about 5,000 people attended the Independence Day event at Naval Station Everett. The base also cancelled its festival in 2011 because of the heightened security posture required of all Navy installations and units.
Naval Station Everett participated in its first Fourth of July Celebration with the Everett community in 1999, with public ship tours, a concert and fireworks display.
