According to the state Department of Fish and Wildlife, some recent creel samples had sport fishermen boating better than a chinook per rod in the Area 9 selective fishery, and that hot success rate burned up the quota earlier than expected.
As a result, Marine Area 9 closed to chinook Aug. 4, and the daily limit in Marine Area 10 was cut to one marked chinook. Coho and pinks remain legal in Area 9, two silvers plus two additional pinks, and the Edmonds Fishing Pier remains open to all three species.
Biologists expect the chinook season to run through the month in Area 10.
